Earthquake swarm activity detected beneath Halemaʻumaʻu over the weekend

HONOLULU (KHON) — Seismic activity at Kīlauea started over the weekend and continued into the early morning of Monday, Jan. 19, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The southeast part of Halemaʻumaʻu felt two earthquake swarm clusters — one at 3:49 p.m. on Jan. 18 and the other at 3:58 a.m. the next day — beneath the surface.

“The swarms are related to migrating magmatic pressure within the summit region but their impact on the next episode of fountaining, if any, is unknown at this time,” USGS said.
