New regional kitchen for schools means more jobs and delicious food

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Department of Education had a groundbreaking for a new O’ahu regional kitchen on Friday, Jan. 29th, in Whitmore Village. Phase 1 of the development puts the kitchen on track to be complete by June 2027.

The new kitchen will cook fresh and local menu items and ingredients, then deliver them to schools to finish preparing. Currently these food items are shipped in frozen and then reheated by the schools.

The DOE has also been working with the Culinary Institute of America and the Culinary Institute of the Pacific to help revitalize their menu with this new kitchen, with healthy and locally sourced food…
