Power outage sparks renewed push to restructure HECO

HONOLULU (KHON2) — After a massive power outage that left thousands across the island in the dark yesterday, lawmakers are pushing a proposal to restructure Hawaiian Electric, raising new questions about reliability and accountability.

At The Bike Factory in Kailua, manager Mel Nakahata says the hardest part wasn’t just losing electricity, it was not knowing when it would come back.

On a typical day, Nakahata says the shop brings in about one to two thousand dollars. Yesterday, much of that was lost.

“Because everything is computer-based, our electrical system, everything was out. Phones weren’t working. Computers weren’t working. We can’t look at our rental schedule to see who’s supposed to come in,” said Nakahata. “We didn’t know how long it was going to be and when the power would come on.”…
