Law enforcement cracking down on illegal e-bikes

EWA, Oahu (KHON2) — Efforts to better define and regulate electric bicycles continue.

Hawaii DOE bans e-motorcycles from all campuses; new policy revealed

According to the Honolulu Police Department, an illegal e-bike is defined as a bicycle that meets any of the following requirements:

  • A motor exceeding 750 watts
  • No pedals
  • Can go over 28 mph, assisted by a motor.

Electric dirt bikes are also not classified as e-bikes, but motor vehicles, therefore illegal to ride without a license, insurance, or vehicle identification number.

In a statement, the Honolulu Police Department says: “Even with a compliant e-bike, you can still receive a citation if you aren’t following the rules of the road.”
