Honolulu’s emergency director evaluates ‘double whammy’ storm

HONOLULU (KHON2) — With school closures and emergency proclamations issued, the City and County of Honolulu is working on keeping roads clear and maintaining critical infrastructure as a strong cold front continues through the islands until at least Monday evening, Feb. 9.

Officials ask folks to ‘stay put’ following assessment of damages from severe weather

“Yeah, we’ll be evaluating it working hand in hand with the state and Hawaii Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service,” Honolulu Department of Emergency Management director Randal Collins said Monday morning. “Will be evaluating when those those the with the updated forecast, what that looks like, and then we’ll be working with our public safety team and our debris clearance teams to make sure that we’re ready to go and get either roadways clear or critical infrastructure back up and running.”

Collins adds that the gusty wind, which had knocked down upwards of 40 trees on Oahu and caused over a dozen roofs to be damaged on Sunday, had stabilized overnight.

“Things calmed down a little bit, so we were able to kind of downshift a little bit, get some rest for some of the team. But the team is back in this morning, activating our emergency operations center again, and we’re going to be looking at some of the approaching weather that’s still to come.”…
