WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A new state law requires landlords to notify mediation services when they issue an eviction notice to tenants, giving both parties a chance to resolve disputes before going to court.
The law, Act 278, came from Act 202, enacted on Maui after the eviction moratorium ended following the 2023 fires.
“Seeing the efficacy, our legislature said this can work statewide because we still have the same economic challenges, said Bevanne Bowers, Maui Mediation Services executive director. “We’re still reeling from the fires.”
