Ahi market prices double affecting businesses operations

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A huge market price rise on ahi pushed Ryan Ching, owner of Ry’s Poke Shop, to close his Kahuku store for the time being.

“Very few boats came in, and light catches for three days in a row, so that just skyrocketed the price for a lot of us,” said Ching. “So I just closed my shop down for Monday.”

“We saw a very strong auction, prices starting at the beginning of last week, and I think that was really attributed to the start of Lent,” said Mike Goto, United Fishing Agency vice president, on the prices. “Toward the end of last week, the supply kind of tapered off, and that’s just a natural occurrence, the rotation of boats.”

The United Fishing Agency says that at this time of year, market changes are common, but some consumers say the changes they’ve seen previously have been the biggest change since the pandemic…
