Kona low storms brought more than 2 trillion gallons of water to Hawaiʻi

HONOLULU (KHON2) — More than two trillion gallons of water poured onto the Hawaiian islands throughout the month of March, officials at the University of Hawaiʻi confirmed.

Enough water to fill three million Olympic-sized swimming pools poured onto the islands over a two-week-long period; as high as 3,000 percent of levels usual for this time of the year.

Researchers through UH’s Hawaiʻi Mesonet and the Hawaiʻi Climate Data Portal observed the effects of the two Kona low systems, which culminated in a disastrous “rain bomb” over Oʻahu…
