Wagyu Smashburger Pop-Up Sneaks Into Ala Moana, Locals Pounce

MF Burger Shop, a low-key new smashburger pop-up from the team behind Jugo Life, has quietly started slinging wagyu smashburgers and beef-tallow fries in the Ala Moana neighborhood. The crew pops up roughly once a week and leans on an Instagram preorder system to keep things orderly at the tiny service window tucked in next door.

Tommy Oh, who operates Jugo Life, says the concept came together after a month of recipe testing and a simple goal of serving “a good, simple” burger. In an interview with Aloha State Daily, Oh explained, “Wagyu is the fattiest beef that you can get, so I decided to use that.” He kicked off the first pop-up several weeks before April 16, 2026, and now announces upcoming dates and preorder windows on Instagram.

What They’re Serving

The menu is intentionally tight, built around the MF Wagyu Smashburger ($15), which stacks double wagyu patties with American cheese, grilled and raw onions, pickles, and a secret sauce. On the side, there are beef-tallow fries ($6) cooked with locally rendered tallow. As noted by Aloha State Daily, the smashburgers are made to order to keep everything as fresh as possible.

How The Pop-Up Works

Customers first check in at Jugo Life at their designated order time, then get directed next door to a compact pickup window where their burgers come out hot. A bit of limited seating is available in the small pickup space, so this is more grab-and-go than leisurely lunch. The operation runs out of a tiny retail unit adjacent to Jugo Life, and business listings place Jugo Life at 1232 Waimanu Street, just west of Ala Moana Shopping Center. MapQuest also lists Jugo Life at that address.

Why It Fits

MF Burger Shop taps directly into a broader national wave of smashburger counters and pop-ups, a trend that Eater recently dubbed “The Year We Got Smashed” as thin, seared patties and melty cheese have spread far and wide. At the same time, more chefs and spots are revisiting animal fats for frying, and coverage has tracked a beef-tallow comeback that helps explain the return of tallow fries, as noted by The Week…
