HONOLULU (HI Now) – Nestled under a canopy of majestic monkeypod trees on the historic Salvation Army property in Manoa, Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop is so much more than a great place to eat. The beloved bakery and restaurant operates out of a building that dates back to 1922 and its mission is just as meaningful as its history. About half of the staff is made up of women coming out of incarceration or recovery from addiction, giving them a safe place to work, a skill to grow, and a real second chance at life.
“We give them an opportunity to learn a skill and help become the person that they were meant to be,” said owner Ross Anderson during a recent appearance on High Noon Daily. He and his wife Stephanie founded Waioli on a simple but powerful belief: It takes a community to heal the community. The business is their way of being part of that solution, and it’s working beautifully.
Of course, the food doesn’t hurt either! Waioli’s signature scones are legendary, think Blueberry Cream Cheese, Mango Lilikoi, Ube and White Chocolate, and a savory Smoked Pork Belly with cheddar and sea salt.
