Leroy Burrell, the former University of Houston star sprinter who later led the Cougars’ track and field program for 23 years, has been hired as Texas A&M’s head coach, the school announced Sunday night.
Burrell replaces Pat Henry, who recently retired after 22 seasons as A&M’s coach and 10 NCAA team championships.
Burrell had spent the past four years at Auburn. He departed UH for Auburn in June 2022, citing the need for a clean slate after the death of his son Cameron on Aug. 9, 2021. Cameron Burrell, who had been an NCAA champion sprinter at UH, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 26…
