A 75-year-old man died after the car he was driving struck a concrete barrier on the Gulf Freeway last Thursday, in a crash a Houston police officer witnessed firsthand near the 7000 block of South Interstate Highway 45. The driver appeared to suffer a medical episode just before losing control of his white Chevrolet Impala, according to investigators, and he was pronounced dead at a Houston hospital the following day.
The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. on August 27 at 7000 Gulf Freeway, a stretch of I-45 South in southeast Houston near Woodridge Drive and the Golfcrest/Reveille neighborhood, close to the Gulfgate Center Mall retail corridor, according to the City of Houston. An HPD officer directly witnessed the Impala strike the concrete barrier, the department said. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the driver to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him deceased on August 28.
Houston police say the man appeared to have suffered a medical episode that preceded the crash, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will conduct the required postmortem examination and is responsible for notifying the man’s family before his identity can be released publicly. Under Article 49.25 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, the institute is statutorily required to investigate all sudden, unexpected, or traffic-related deaths and to identify legal next-of-kin under Texas Health and Safety Code Section 711.002 before findings are made public, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The case, numbered 108804126-T, is being handled by HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, with Sergeant J. Wu and Officer J. Quezada reporting details of the crash.
