Mayor Whitmire presents new car to UH student whose vehicle was shot by HPD

Mayor John Whitmire, flanked by Houston police union leaders, handed over the keys of a new Honda Civic to a 20-year-old University of Houston kinesiology student whose car was totaled after police shot it dozens of times during a standoff outside an upscale shopping center earlier this summer.

Praising Abigail Trujillo’s work ethic, dedication and patience after the claim she filed with the city was denied, Whitmire said he was upset at how city attorneys had handled her request for help replacing her Nissan sedan.

He vowed Friday that the city’s legal department would examine claims individually from here on out…
