As Democrats prepare to take control of the Texas House, they are rallying to make the legislature’s longest-serving woman, state Rep. Senfronia Thompson, their next House speaker.
Thompson, a Houston Democrat, announced her campaign for the powerful position late Tuesday. If chosen, she would be the first woman and the first Black legislator to serve as speaker.
The position is among the three most consequential in state government, shaping policy alongside the governor and lieutenant governor, who oversees the Senate. Thompson is vying to replace current House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Lubbock Republican.
