AI Misidentifies Texas Man at a DMV for an Armed Robbery. He Was Sent to Jail, Raped and Beaten

‘The police were trying to do their job … they were misled by Sunglass Hut’

A Texas man is seeking millions of dollars after artificial intelligence technology falsely identified him as an armed robber – leading to jail time that culminated in him being raped and beaten .

Harvey Murphy Jr. was renewing his license at a Gonzales, Texas, DMV, when he was informed that there was an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest. He was baffled and had no knowledge of the alleged crime.

“All he knew was he was being transported to the Harris County Jail because of a felony arrest warrant,” court documents obtained by AL.com said.

Murphy was accused of robbing a Houston Sunglass Hut on January 22, 2022. Two armed men had broken into the store and taken thousands of dollars. While the police initially began investigating the robbery, they were quickly contacted by Sunglass Hut’s parent company EssilorLuxottica.

A loss prevention employee told police they “could stop their investigation because he found their guy,” according to AL.com.
