Rams News: Former Rams RB Cam Akers Likely To Get Starting Nod for New Team

Cam Akers, formerly a running back for the Los Angeles Rams , is getting ready for a significant opportunity with the Houston Texans this weekend. With both Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce sidelined due to injuries, Akers is expected to step in as the starting running back against the Minnesota Vikings. Reports confirm that neither Mixon nor Pierce has practiced leading up to the matchup, indicating a clear path for Akers.

As noted by Turf Show Times , Akers hasn’t started a game since Week 1 of last season with the Rams, where he made a strong impression with 22 carries compared to Kyren Williams’ 15. After a brief stint with the Vikings following a trade, he dealt with an Achilles injury but managed to make a comeback during the playoffs. Recently, in a game against the Chicago Bears, he recorded seven carries for 32 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, which is promising heading into this weekend.

During the preseason, Akers shone brightly, leading Texans in rushing with 24 carries for 112 yards. He also showcased his versatility by catching eight passes for 61 yards and scoring a touchdown. His recent performances have led Texans’ offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik to praise his skills, stating, “He has great vision. He’s really good at reading that (zone scheme), we call it riding the wave.”
