The First Day of Spring in Houston: What it really means

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Ah, spring in Houston! (Achoo!) That magical time of year when we say goodbye to winter’s chill and hello to longer days, blooming bluebonnets, and—let’s be honest—some wild weather swings. And don’t forget about that Oak pollen.

The Science Behind the First Day of Spring

Spring officially kicks off with the vernal equinox , occurring around March 19-21 in the Northern Hemisphere. This year, it falls on March 20, 2025 , at 4:01 a.m. CDT. On this day, the sun’s center crosses the Earth’s equator, resulting in nearly equal daylight and nighttime hours for several days.

This phenomenon occurs because Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun during the equinox, leading to a “nearly” equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes.

The term “equinox” is derived from two Latin words: aequus (equal) and nox (night).
