Major U.S. airline breaks ground on new maintenance facility at Texas airport but not to fix planes

HOUSTON – United Airlines is making a major investment at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), breaking ground on a new $177 million, 140,000-square-foot Ground Service Equipment (GSE) Maintenance Facility and opening a cutting-edge Technical Operations Training Center.

As Houston’s largest airline, United employs over 14,000 people and operates more than 500 daily departures. The new GSE facility, set to open in 2027, will support the airline’s 1,800 ground vehicles, offering expanded repair and storage space. Meanwhile, the $16 million training center will provide technicians with advanced resources, including simulators and hands-on engine maintenance labs.

“These investments reinforce our commitment to Houston as a critical hub,” said Phil Griffith, United’s Vice President of Airport Operations.
