Rumors of an armed Texas serial killer have sparked fear on Facebook. Authorities say they’re false.

Social media posts warning Houstonians of an armed serial killer with facial tattoos on the loose killing nurses, police officers and others have attracted a lot of attention online — but the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office this week emphatically assured residents that they are fake.

The posts, shared through Facebook groups in Montgomery County and other communities across Texas and the U.S, refer to a dangerous, “known serial killer” on the loose, varying in story and location of killings. They all include the same mugshot.
