New apartment inspection ordinance aims to improve safety for Houston renters

HOUSTON (KIAH) – A proposed ordinance that would require stricter inspections of Houston apartment complexes with repeated safety complaints is headed to the City Council’s Prop A Committee on May 27 at 10 a.m..

The Apartment Inspection Ordinance would apply to multi-family properties that receive 10 or more habitability complaints in a year. These properties would be labeled as High-Risk Rental Buildings (HRRBs) and would have to register with the city, undergo inspections, and participate in a training program that helps landlords understand housing safety rules.
