Broken backs, killer bee attacks: A.J. Foyt defied death to become Indy 500 king, Houston royalty

T he latest edition of the Indianapolis 500 included two Top 10 finishers — David Malukas (third) and Santino Ferrucci (seventh) — driving for A.J. Foyt Racing on Sunday. That’s only fitting, because what is Indy without Foyt? Even at 90 years old, Foyt spent the past week in Indianapolis carefully watching over his team.

Even though he hasn’t raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1992, Foyt still is tied for the most Indianapolis 500 wins (4) and has the most starts (35) there, including every single one from 1958-92.

Foyt and Mario Andretti are the only drivers to have won both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500, but Foyt is the only person to have won those two as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans…
