Three Orleans jail escapees captured in Baton Rouge, Houston, leaving two still on the loose

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Orleans Justice Center jail escapee Lenton VanBuren Jr. was recaptured Monday (May 26) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced. And fellow fugitives Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald have been apprehended in or near Houston, a law enforcement source told Fox 8.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry confirmed the Texas arrests in a post to X.

The three arrests mean eight of the 10 fugitives who escaped the city lockup on May 16 have been recaptured.

VanBuren, Tate and Donald are the first of the escapees to be caught outside of New Orleans. Only four-time killer Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey remain at large.

Baton Rouge police, acting on a tip, stopped a man wearing a mask, the source told Fox 8. The man was detained and identified as VanBuren. Authorities are executing a search warrant at a hotel where VanBuren was staying…
