Since 2004, the Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival – HAAPIFEST, for short – annually rounds up films that cover the Asian American diaspora. This year, the fest, running Friday through June 15, will salute those trailblazing, visionary Asian Americans who were the first to infiltrate American cinema in the last century.
“Our theme for the first weekend is paying tribute to all of the Asian American artists that have paved the way for Asian American cinema in the U.S.,” says HAAPIFEST director Tengah Nguyen.
The fest will kick things off with its opening-night film “Third Act,” where filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura will chronicle the life and legacy of his father Robert A. Nakamura, who’s known as “the godfather of Asian American media.”…
