Houston couple displaced by fire at senior living complex seeking community’s help in covering costs

A Houston couple is seeking the community’s help in covering the cost of housing and basic needs after a large fire destroyed their home last week.

Rose and Joe Garza’s apartments were among the more than 30 units destroyed in last week’s 2-alarm fire at the Independence Hall Apartments, a senior living complex in north Houston.

The couple, who are both disabled, lived in separate apartment units because Joe uses a wheelchair and needs large medical equipment for day-to-day activities after he had a stroke in 2015. They had lived at the complex for 11 years, but were told their building would no longer exist after the fire. In the meantime, Rose, who is blind, is staying with a friend while her husband is in the hospital…
