Houston medical professionals charged in sprawling health care fraud crackdown

More than a dozen Houston-area medical professionals and health care business owners have been indicted as part of a sprawling, nationwide crackdown on health care fraud, the Department of Justice announced Monday.

The charges are part of what state and federal prosecutors have called the largest health care fraud in DOJ history. While records show many cases aren’t directly connected to each other, prosecutors across the U.S.charged more than 320 peopleand uncovered nearly $15 million in false claims, according to the DOJ.

“The scale of today’s takedown is unprecedented, and so is the harm we’re confronting,” Juliet T. Hodgkins, the acting inspector general for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said in a news release. “Individuals who attempt to steal from the federal health care system and put vulnerable patients at risk will be held accountable.”…
