Houston ‘Anti-Tren’ gang sting started as gun sale probe; ties to violent group not clear

The Department of Justice last week declared it had stepped into the middle of a violent war between migrant gangs battling each other in Houston, and arrested more than a dozen people on one side of the conflict using a coordinated sting.

But despite the department’s public pronouncement that it had arrested members and associates of Anti-Tren — a violent splinter group made up of former members of Tren de Aragua — DOJ prosecutors presented little evidence of their gang ties and acts of violence while arguing the men should be held in custody indefinitely.
