After years of warnings about leaving guns in unlocked cars, fewer people have reported stolen weapons to Houston police.
Through the first six months of 2025, Houston was on track to see fewer stolen weapons compared to 2024, which itself saw a nearly 300-report decline, according to internal data from the police department obtained through an open records request.
“The data from HPD … certainly is encouraging,” said Marc Levin, the Houston-based chief policy counsel for the Council on Criminal Justice. The numbers bear out with national trends and are positive, as it means the country might see fewer victims of gun violence, he said…
