Emergency alert test in Houston scheduled for Friday morning

Phones across the city will blare a public safety alert as part of a test by local emergency officials.

Cell phones across Houston will ping with an Amber Alert-style warning at 11 a.m. Friday as city officials test the emergency messaging system.

“This (wireless emergency alert) message would be for a true life safety, imminent threat, where we would want the public to take some type of immediate action to protect human health or property,” said Brian Mason, the city’s interim chief of resilience and recovery. “It’s not something we send on a regular basis. That’s why we want to test this and make sure that our residents have that enabled on their phones and know what it means when that message comes through.”

Mason said some residents may have turned off those alerts due to “getting overwhelmed with messaging.” To turn wireless emergency alerts back on, Houston’s office of emergency management recommends:…
