Target to build $19 million store at historic Sears location, per filing

A landmark retail site in Houston’s Garden Oaks neighborhood is likely getting a new life with a familiar red bullseye.

Target has submitted plans to build a new 129,490-square-foot store at 4000 N. Shepherd Dr., the former site of the historic Sears department store that served north Houston for more than 70 years before closing in 2020.

According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the $19.1 million project is expected to break ground in April 2026 and wrap by March 2027. The development of the store would be led by RSP Architects, based in Minneapolis, Minn., Target’s hometown…
