Man charged in 2005 death of TSU student extradited to Houston from Mexico, district attorney says

A man charged in the 2005 death of a Texas Southern University student was extradited to Houston from Mexico, where the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said he had been hiding for nearly two decades.

Luis Uriel Castillo, 38, is accused of robbing and killing 24-year-old Cornelius B. Ray on Jan. 13, 2005, inside his apartment in the 8500 block of Broadway in southeast Houston, according to previous reports by the Chronicle. Castillo, a Mexican national, fled to Matamoros, after the killing, according to the District Attorney’s Office. He was arrested by Mexican authorities on April 8, 2024, and was held in custody while an extradition request was adjudicated. He will remain in custody at the Harris County Jail until his trial, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Investigators with the Houston Police Department believed Castillo had met Ray through the Internet or an online messaging service, according to previous Chronicle reporting. Ray’s body was found beaten, shot and wrapped in a blanket on the floor of his bedroom, according to police. His possessions were removed from his apartment and his car was also taken, but was found abandoned in northeast Houston…
