Accused killer of Houston college student extradited from Mexico — 20 years later

Luis Uriel Castillo, now 39 years old, is accused of shooting 24-year-old Texas Southern University student Cornelius Ray in the back of the head in 2005. Castillo, who faces a murder charge, was returned to Houston this week and is being jailed on a $1 million bond.

A then-teenager accused of fleeing to Mexico after fatally shooting a Texas Southern University student in 2005 has been extradited to Houston, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced this week.

Luis Uriel Castillo, now 39 years old, faces a murder charge and is being held at the Harris County Jail on a $1 million bond, court records show. He is accused of killing Cornelius Ray, a 24-year-old man who was found dead in his southeast Houston apartment with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

The DA’s office, in a Wednesday news release, said Castillo was arrested by Mexican authorities with the help of the FBI in April 2024.
