Just a few weeks after its removal for construction spurred community concerns, Houston’s rainbow crosswalks are returning brighter than ever.
On Wednesday, work crews could be seen at Westheimer and Taft repainting the road with the six fresh, bright colors of the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag. The rainbow crosswalks, first installed in 2017 to honor Montrose’s history as Houston’s gayborhood, were removed in September as part of ongoing road work on Westheimer. METRO confirmed to Chron that they were being restored to their original state.
“Repaving work that required the removal of the rainbow crosswalk began this summer. During the construction phase, temporary white striping was applied to ensure pedestrian safety,” said Anna Carpenter, a spokeswoman for METRO. “The crosswalk will be restored to how it was previously as the City of Houston continues to review recent federal guidance. METRO will continue to follow the City’s direction and remains committed to prioritizing safety, reliability, and accessibility for all road users.”…
