Despite serial killer theories, Texas launches new paddling trail in Houston

The same bayous making headlines for grim discoveries are now making waves for a different reason.

On Saturday, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will officially open its 90th paddling trail—this one weaving through Greens Bayou in northeast Houston. The new route adds nearly 8 miles to the state’s growing network of designated paddling trails, which now surpasses 700 miles in total.

“We’re thrilled to add the Greens Bayou trail to the Texas Paddling Trails Program, especially since about a quarter of all Texans live within driving distance of this new trail,” said Shelly Plante, TPWD nature tourism manager. “Adding almost 8 more miles of trail in the Houston area is huge in helping people connect to nature.”

The Greens Bayou Paddling Trail starts at Brock Adventure Park and winds 7.7 miles through a lush, forested corridor before ending at Thomas Bell Foster Park. A midway exit at Strickland Park allows paddlers to cut the trip short. For beginners and experienced kayakers alike, the float takes between 2 and 3.5 hours, depending on water conditions.
