Pop-up grocery store brings fresh food and hope to southwest Houston

HOUSTON (KIAH) – A free, indoor pop-up grocery store served 100 families on Friday at the Burnett Bayland Community Center. The event aimed to bring fresh produce and pantry staples to families living in southwest Houston. The pop-up was a partnership between Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones and the nonprofit Second Servings, which focuses on fighting hunger and reducing food waste.

The pop-up was from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and was open to residents who pre-registered. The event offered a wide assortment of groceries at no cost. The only thing families had to bring was reusable bags to carry items.

This effort was meant to do more than hand out food. Second Servings and the commissioner’s office say the event helps rescue perfectly good groceries that would otherwise go to waste and gets them into the hands of families who need them. It is also part of a broader push to make food access more equitable across Harris County…
