Just a week after painting, Houston’s rainbow crosswalk to be removed

Just hours after Gov. Greg Abbott directed state agencies to withhold road and transportation funding from cities that fail to remove markings that convey “political ideologies” on public roads, Houston METRO said it would remove a rainbow crosswalk in Montrose that had been repainted just over a week before.

In a press release posted Wednesday evening, METRO said that the crosswalk at Westheimer and Taft in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood would be re-striped to “bring the pedestrian crosswalk into compliance with federal design and safety standards.”

“We recognize the significance this crosswalk has to the community, which is why our project team restored the infrastructure to its pre-construction condition,” METRO said in the statement. “However, given the recent directive, we will comply with the order to preserve support that is essential to our mission of providing safe, clean, reliable and accessible transit to all communities that depend on our services.”…
