A 10-year-old Houston boy lost his mother. He turned his grief into a book through therapy.

Daron Brim was 10 years old when he watched his mother drown during a summer day by the pool.

Everything changed for Daron in the wake of the life-altering tragedy. He moved from Los Angeles to Houston to live with his aunt, Blair Redmond, and started taking classes at a new school before his mother’s funeral.

Redmond recognized that Daron might need more support after his mother’s death, so she enrolled him in a state-funded counseling program.  Daron worked with a counselor from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston to create a narrative about his mother, Cherice Thomas, and how his life changed after she died…
