Rainbow paint on asphalt has become a battleground in Texas politics.
On Tuesday morning, City of Houston leaders, Texas state representatives, and LGBTQ+ advocates and community members gathered at the corner of Westheimer and Taft in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood to publicly oppose the impending removal of a rainbow crosswalk. Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin, who represents the district where the pride crosswalk is located, said that Gov. Greg Abbott’s mandate to remove rainbow crosswalks in cities is an illegal move that attacks Houston’s historic gayborhood.
“For so many, [Montrose was the place it] was safe to be gay before you could be,” Kamin said. “This is the heartbeat of our LGBTQIA+ community in Houston.”…
