HOUSTON (KIAH) – A grieving family gathered outside the Houston Police Department Thursday, seeking answers after 35-year-old Hector Vasquez was shot and killed at his mechanic shop last week, one of three victims in a deadly shooting that ended when the gunman turned the weapon on himself.
The Vasquez family said the shooter should never have had a gun in the first place. The acknowledgment has only fueled the family’s anger and frustration with the law. As she spoke with reporters, Hector’s wife, Yara Cruz, broke down in tears and said she hadn’t heard from investigators since the day of the shooting. Thursday, HPD said the investigation is still ongoing.
Hector’s sister called for change, saying her brother’s death highlights a growing problem with gun access in the state of Texas, among people who shouldn’t have them.
