Scores of Houstonians paraded in protest along Montrose’s rainbow crosswalks Sunday, defending a neighborhood cornerstone and an emblem of LGBTQ+ pride from state-sanctioned removal.
A crowd of more than 200 people gathered at the corner of Westheimer and Taft for a midday protest against Metro’s plans to restripe the intersection’s pride crosswalks, which have been painted in the six bright colors since 2017. Metro announced its plans this month, hours after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to withhold road funding from any city or county with “social, political, or ideological messages” on the streets.
