HOUSTON — Illegal dumping has been a persistent problem in Houston’s Fifth Ward, something KHOU 11 has been spotlighting for more than a year. From piles of trash to dumped mattresses and even an abandoned boat, residents say they’ve been overwhelmed and overlooked.
Now, more help is arriving. On Wednesday, Council Member Tarsha Jackson joined cleanup crews and volunteers as they began tackling more than 30 illegal dumping hot spots across the neighborhood over the next several days.
KHOU 11’s Michelle Choi met Jackson along Quitman Street, where district crews and the nonprofit Clean Up Houston were working side by side. Clean Up Houston provided a grappler truck and labor at no cost to help remove heavy trash, with Jackson’s District B HOT teams following behind to pick up remaining debris by hand.
