John Whitmire’s anti-scooter agenda is killing Houston’s vibe

In Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s October New York Times profile, while on a police escort to survey the city’s nightlife, the mayor rolled down the window of the police cruiser after coming across a busy bar, then shook his fist and yelled that the music was too loud. He also lamented the homeless population while walking, asking the Times reporter if they smell urine while walking past City Hall. He even got mad at seeing exposed tree roots. Now, his personal grievances are coming for seemingly any transportation that isn’t a car.

On Wednesday, Houston City Council voted to enact a citywide curfew on electric scooters and other “micro mobility devices” between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., an attempt to address what Whitmire has continuously described as “one of the city’s No. 1 security risks.”

At the council meeting on Wednesday, Whitmire stated that while leaving a Houston Dynamo game, he was forced to step aside to let a scooter pass on the sidewalk. (Curiously, he did not mention how incredibly difficult it is to drive through the area because of the sheer amount of vehicles on the road during game time.)…
