He was found in a Houston bayou. Months later, his family celebrates his life — and still seeks answers

Friday morning, Alexis Curry, 21, pulled on a shirt printed with the image of her brother, Anthony Curry, standing in a sea of clouds. “In loving memory,” it said, with a dove on either side.On the back was a childhood picture of her and Anthony, who was 15 years older. The camera captured him holding her up in the air as she beamed back at her big brother.

Alisha Curry, 33, was already wearing her locket with her brother’s ashes around her neck. Her five children, ages 8 months through 6 years, each dressed in red — Anthony’s favorite color.

That Friday would’ve been Anthony’s 36th birthday, if he hadn’t instead been one of at least 28 people found dead in the city’s bayous this year. He was found in May. He’d only been able to hold his youngest nephew once, Alisha realized, as the family gathered round at her Meyerland apartment complex’s playground to look through old photos. During that meeting, he’d given the weeks-old baby the nickname P-5.
