Houston councilwoman says HPD officers shouldn’t have to contact ICE during background checks

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A Houston City Council member is challenging how police handle immigration checks.Councilmember Letitia Plummer says Houston police officers shouldn’t be required to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during routine background checks. Now Plummer is bringing a new proposal to City Council, and it could change long-standing HPD policies.Plummer is pushing to amend two HPD general orders tied to immigration checks. Currently, officers must contact ICE if a background search shows what’s known as an “ICE hit,” which flags someone wanted or detained for immigration reasons. Her proposal would make that contact optional instead of a requirement.Plummer also said to CW39 exclusively that the proposal’s plan is to remove language that bars officers from extending a stop based on possible immigration violations.Plummer said the changes would give HPD more discretion and build trust in immigrant communities.
