Exclusive: Monk whose leg was amputated after vehicle crash near Houston thought he was going to die

The day following his release from the hospital, revered Buddhist monk Phra Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan said Thursday he has already accepted the loss of his limb from a vehicle crash near Houston, viewing it as an offering to the cause of peace.

Maha Dam was released Wednesday from Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he had his leg amputated following an auto-pedestrian accident in Dayton late last month. He had been en route to Washington with a cohort of monks embarking on a 2,300-mile journey from Fort Worth to the nation’s capital for the “Walk for Peace.”

Organizers described the monks’ walk as a first-of-its-kind effort to spread hope and mindfulness across the country. The trek takes the monks through cold weather and the sides of busy roads, and Maha Dam said in an interview that he knew the risks before he began…
