HOUSTON (CW39) – Each year, tens of thousands of young people are living on the streets all over the country. Houston and Southeast Texas are no different. Just as frightening, is that some of them get involved in human trafficking.
That’s why Covenant House Texas has stepped up, year after year, to change that. Founded in 1972 in New York, this faith-based organization says it’s “has been committed to giving homeless youth a safe haven, absolute respect, unconditional love, and a path to lasting independence, in partnership with the community.” With branches all over the country, including here in Houston, they want to continue to be “the voice for homeless youth to provide a safe haven for homeless, abused and abandoned youth ages 18-24.”
Across Houston and Southeast Texas, youth homelessness and human trafficking remains an urgent challenges. CW39’s Sharron Melton sits down with CEO of Covenant House TexasAnthony Flynn to talk about how their programs are helping young people, how the community can help, and how a bold community initiative recently put local leaders on the streets to shine a light on the issue. You can watch the interview above.
It offers an extensive continuum-of-care-model for homeless youth including mental health and substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational training, short-term, transitional and permanent residential programs, street outreach and prevention, faith-based pastoral care and parenting classes in addition to providing the basic necessities of food, clothing, medical care and safe shelter from the streets for youth in crisis.
