Man charged in girlfriend’s killing after Houston police find her body in a chemical barrel

A man accused of killing his girlfriend and dumping her body in an industrial chemical barrel in north Houston professed his innocence Monday as he went before a judge.

Jesus Varela, 48, denied his role in the Dec. 1 death of Christelrose Ramirez through an interpreter before Judge Brian Warren cut him off. He did not have an attorney at the time of his statement as court staff were still attempting to find him a Spanish-speaking lawyer.
