North Shore’s journey to sixth state championship leaves coach Willie Gaston ‘super proud’

ARLINGTON — Willie Gaston bleeds North Shore red.

He was raised on the east side of Houston and played quarterback for the Mustangs from 1999 to 2001. But he never got a chance to celebrate a state championship as a player. When he rejoined the program as an assistant coach in 2008, Gaston found his calling. Developing young men, on and off the field, has been his focus and passion ever since.

Gaston understands as well as anybody the lofty standard that exists at North Shore. He helped the Mustangs kick off what’s been one of the great dynastic runs in Texas high school football history as they seized state championships in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 while competing in the state’s largest classification against some elite opponents…
