Some Houstonians are speaking out against Mayor John Whitmire, arguing that the Houston Police Department’s cooperation with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement has caused the city to lead the nation in immigration arrests.
A New York Times report published last week, which analyzed data from the Deportation Data Project, found that Houston topped U.S. cities for both ICE arrests in the community and detentions in jails and prisons.
The data, from Jan. 20 to Oct. 15, showed that ICE reported 5,200 “at large” arrests in the Houston community. Houston also came out as the city with the most ICE arrests at jails and prisons, with a reported 9,300 detainments within the same time period.”John Whitmire…,” One X user simply put in response to the news.
