Houston police face hundreds of New Year’s Eve gunshot calls. Here are the numbers.

For many people across Houston, New Year’s Eve is synonymous with champagne toasts and time spent with good friends and family. But for the Houston Police Department, it is one of the busiest days of the year.

Houston police responded to nearly 300 calls about gunfire over the most recent New Year’s Eve, compared to around 71 on a random weekend in September, according to data gleaned through an open records request. And the 300 gunfire calls were the lowest police have seen over the New Year’s holiday in years.
