Buddhist monk reunites with Walk for Peace group in Georgia after leg amputation in Houston

More than a month after he was struck in a crash near Houston, Phra Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan returned to his home state of Georgia this week and reunited with a group of fellow Buddhist monks trekking in a “Walk for Peace” from Texas to Washington.

Maha Dam, who said he thought he might die during the crash in Liberty County, had his leg amputated last month in Houston as a result of his injuries. After his release from Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center, he stayed at the Wat Phouthasamakhy Lao Temple in Houston until returning to Georgia on New Year’s Eve.

When Maha Dam reunited with the group Wednesday at his temple in Snellville, Ga., the walk’s leader, Venerable Bhikkhu Paññākāra, kneeled beside him and the two embraced. Maha Dam plans to meet the Walk for Peace group once again when they reach their destination at the nation’s capital…
